EndNote X2 offers a wide breadth of new features and improvements, such as the Find Full Text option, faster online search options, and Smartgroup creation. If you have not upgraded to the new EndNote X2, you can do so by going to the library’s EndNote webpage. Click on “EndNote Installation” and enter your FoxNet ID and password (the one you use for email). On the left hand side, under Talbot Research Library and Software, click on either Version X2 for Macintosh or Windows, depending on your operating system.
Just as a reminder: EndNote has created patches for both the Window and Macintosh versions of the program which allow EndNote usage in different “modes”. New EndNote library modes enable you to choose the way you like to work. You can use the online search introduced in EndNote X2 that imports results automatically into your EndNote library, or the temporary online search that requires moving references to the permanent library.
To upgrade to the X2 patch, please check the following link for instruction. Note that the Macintosh version of the patch has additional step for updating the “Cite While You Write” option.

from The EndNote website:
The temporary online search results are back! Now you can choose between having results automatically stored in the library or kept separate for more selectivity. Three new buttons above the Groups panel provide:
- Integrated Library & Online Search Mode—library groups and online search results are combined on this panel to simplify navigation. Online search results are saved directly into the open library.
- Local Library Mode—the focus on this panel is groups built from the EndNote library. The Online Search groups are not available. When initiating an online search from the Tools menu, the Groups pane display switches to Online Search Mode.
- Online Search Mode—only the Online Search groups are available. When downloading references from an online database, the references are stored in a temporary library much like in previous versions of EndNote. Those references you wish to keep can then be copied to a permanent EndNote library.

After considering users’ suggestions, EndNote has created a patch for EndNote X2 (version 12) that will help remedy some of the software’s problems.
From the EndNote website:
EndNote Update X2.0.1 for Mac OS X
and X2.0.2 for Windows
Windows:
It is recommended that you use Program Updates. Close all programs and turn off any background software, such as virus protection software. From within EndNote, choose “EndNote Program Updates” from the “Help” menu and follow the on-screen prompts.
Alternately, you can download a patch (please note that this is a .zip file that contains the .msp patch installer). To run this installer open the ZIP file and then double-click the MSP file to update your version of EndNote X2.
Note: While the patch is labeled EndNote X2.0.2, the “About EndNote” screen continues to display EndNote X2.0.1 (build 3514). This version of the patch does not require users to uninstall and reinstall the program.
Mac OS X:
Download the Mac OS X Patcher file. You will find the update in the Download folder. Open the “EndNoteX2.0.1 Patch Installer” folder. Double-click on the “EndNote X2.0.1 Patcher” file and follow the prompts.
What’s New in X2.0.1/X2.0.2
EndNote library modes:
New EndNote library modes enable you to choose the way you like to work. You can use the online search introduced in EndNote X2 that imports results automatically into your EndNote library, or the temporary online search that requires moving references to the permanent library.
Additional New Features:
- Improvements to accuracy and speed to Find Full Text
- More icons and auto-groups to enhanced usability and workflows
- Improvements to CWYW for Word 2008 for (Mac OS X)
- Added CWYW support for .enlp package libraries (Mac OS X)
- Updated Connections, Bibliographic Output Styles, and Import Filters
As stated above, when you install the patch EndNote will offer three views within the program itself: one view that automatically imports online results directly into your library; a temporary online view that allows you to chose which references to add to your library; and a general library view. When you are searching in the “temporary online” mode, you will need to right-click the chosen references to add them to your library.

The Macintosh version of EndNote X2 is now available on our website, along with the User Guide and Getting Started manuals. The new version of EndNote has many helpful additions, including a feature that grabs PDFs automatically and attaches them to the record – as long as the PDFs are available, that is!
To download the new version, please visit our EndNote Resources page, click on the EndNote Installation link, enter your FoxNetID/password, and then click EndNote version X2 for Macintosh (under Talbot Research Library – EndNote).
Feel free to email me Kate.Eckert@fccc.edu or Liz Elisabeth.Duff@fccc.edu with questions or call us at x2711!
