The Research Work Acts (HR3699) was introduced in the United States House of Representatives last  month.  The purpose of the bill is to appeal the NIH Open Access Mandate that, (as you all know by now),  requires authors to deposit their final manuscript of peer-reviewed papers into pubmed central if they arise from NIH funding.  The bill is supported by the Association of American Publishers and the Copyright Alliance.  Open access publishers, like Biomed Central, oppose the bill, as do Nature Publishing Group, the American Association of Science, university presses, such as MIT Press, Rockefeller University Press, and library groups such as the American Library Association and the Medical Library Association.

This NIH Open Access Mandate has allowed the public (including the Fox Chase community) to access significant papers in science and medicine without the barrier of a subscription to the journal that the paper appears.

Highlights of the report include:

 Between 1990/ 1991 and 2008 overall death rates decreased 23% in men and 15% in women translating to more than 1 million deaths from cancer that were avoided.

• Death rates for lung, colon, breast and prostate cancers, which are responsible for the most cancer deaths, continue to decline.
• New cases and death rates vary among racial and ethnic groups.
  • African American men have a 15% higher incidence of cancer and a 33% higher death rate than white men.
  • African American women have a 6% lower rate of new cancer cases but a 16% higher death rate than white women.
  • African American men have had the most rapid decline in death rates over the past decade at 2.4% per year.
• There has been an increase over the last decade of people developing less common cancers that include:
  • Pancreas
  • Liver
  • Thyroid
  • Kidney
  • Melanoma of the skin
  • Esophageal adenocarcinoma
  • Throat cancers associated with HPV infection
• Reasons for the increased rates in the above cancers are not entirely known but believed to be linked to obesity.  It is also possible that more of these cancers are being reported because of better early detection practices.

In July we added Access Surgery to our collection.  This adds two dozen electronic books, procedure videos, images, a procedure look-up tool, a differential diagnosis tool and more.

Our UpToDate license now allows our users remote access so this is no longer prohibited as in the past. I am currently working with IT to sync Soarian with UTD so that clinicians can accrue CME credit by searching and reading topics. You will be hearing more about this in early 2012 so stay tuned.

Micromedex had a major revision (Micromedex 2.0) with a new look, feel, and functionality.  Did you know that you could do a search “drugs that cause” and quickly get a list of drugs?  Try searching “drugs that cause insomnia”or “drugs that cause migraine” and see how quickly you get results.

We added a new librarian, Alex Pfundt, in July and he has been busy creating LibGuides.  LibGuides are collections of electronic resources on a particular topic. Libraries share Guides and many are enriched with video content, podcasts, widgets, and more.  It makes it easy for you because everything you need is in one place.  We currently have LibGuides on EndNote, Medicine, Nursing, Copyright, How to use the Catalog, Breast Cancer, Statistics, and more.  If you have an idea for one that you’d like to see, please let us know.

Last spring, many of you participated in the Value of Library and Information Services in Patient Care Study. From the results, we learned that:

• Information provided by the Talbot Research Library significantly influences FCCC clinicians in managing clinical situations and advising patients.
• Information is relevant, accurate, current, and believed to contribute to a higher quality of care
• Participants believed that the information saved them time, decreased additional tests and procedures, and avoided adverse drug reactions and patient misunderstandings.

In September we switched our old SIRSI catalog for the new Koha system. This catalog adds a modern look and functionality that our 1998 system lacked – book covers, a virtual browse, a cart function, and the ability to create personalized lists and tags.  We are still busy migrating the serials collection and adding tags and lists, but try it and let us know. If you have any ideas for Lists and tags that you’d like to see, please let us know.

Our Staff Publications List and Staff Publications Database changed a bit.  I moved the Pubs List to a monthly list instead of a weekly list and added links to the articles that we can access.  The Staff Pubs database was recently enhanced with the addition of PMCID numbers with the publications. Save yourself a hunt in Pubmed and look here first for PMCID numbers.

Recently, Alex designed a survey to determine what classes you may be interested in having the library deliver.  We were pleased with the participation and are using the results to plan instruction for the coming year.

Lastly, I recently received funding from the National Network of Libraries of Medicine to obtain ipads for the librarians.  We will be using these to learn and support mobile technology and to do outreach to you out of the library.
