The US spends billions of dollars to save these late-stage patients, trying to devise better drugs and chemotherapies that might kill a cancer at its strongest. This cure-driven approach has dominated the research since Richard Nixon declared war on the disease in 1971. But it has yielded meager results: The overall cancer mortality rate in the US has fallen by a scant 8 percent since 1975. (Heart disease deaths, by comparison, have dropped by nearly 60 percent in that period.) We are so consumed by the quest to save the 566,000 that we overlook the far more staggering statistic at the other side of the survival curve: More than a third of all Americans—some 120 million people—will be diagnosed with cancer sometime in their lives. Their illness may be invisible now, but it’s out there. And that presents a great, and largely unexamined, opportunity: Find and treat their cancers early and that 566,000 figure will shrink.

After considering users’ suggestions, EndNote has created a patch for EndNote X2 (version 12) that will help remedy some of the software’s problems.
From the EndNote website:
EndNote Update X2.0.1 for Mac OS X
and X2.0.2 for Windows
Windows:
It is recommended that you use Program Updates. Close all programs and turn off any background software, such as virus protection software. From within EndNote, choose “EndNote Program Updates” from the “Help” menu and follow the on-screen prompts.
Alternately, you can download a patch (please note that this is a .zip file that contains the .msp patch installer). To run this installer open the ZIP file and then double-click the MSP file to update your version of EndNote X2.
Note: While the patch is labeled EndNote X2.0.2, the “About EndNote” screen continues to display EndNote X2.0.1 (build 3514). This version of the patch does not require users to uninstall and reinstall the program.
Mac OS X:
Download the Mac OS X Patcher file. You will find the update in the Download folder. Open the “EndNoteX2.0.1 Patch Installer” folder. Double-click on the “EndNote X2.0.1 Patcher” file and follow the prompts.
What’s New in X2.0.1/X2.0.2
EndNote library modes:
New EndNote library modes enable you to choose the way you like to work. You can use the online search introduced in EndNote X2 that imports results automatically into your EndNote library, or the temporary online search that requires moving references to the permanent library.
Additional New Features:
- Improvements to accuracy and speed to Find Full Text
- More icons and auto-groups to enhanced usability and workflows
- Improvements to CWYW for Word 2008 for (Mac OS X)
- Added CWYW support for .enlp package libraries (Mac OS X)
- Updated Connections, Bibliographic Output Styles, and Import Filters
As stated above, when you install the patch EndNote will offer three views within the program itself: one view that automatically imports online results directly into your library; a temporary online view that allows you to chose which references to add to your library; and a general library view. When you are searching in the “temporary online” mode, you will need to right-click the chosen references to add them to your library.
If you feel that you need assistance with the new patched version of EndNote, do not hesitate to call us (x2711) or email: Kate.eckert@fccc.edu

The National Library of Medicine has released information about the new PubMed system that will be launched in mid-December:
The 2009 PubMed system will be brought up in mid-December. In addition to the new field, Create Date (see Create Date — New Field to Indicate When Records Added to PubMed), here are some additional notes of interest.
- The auto-complete feature will be added to First Author, Last Author, and Full Author Name on the search-by-field section of Advanced Search.
- The old “tab” version of Limits will not be updated. Future changes will be made only to the limit feature on the Advanced Search screen.
- A new field, PubMed Central Release, will be added to the MEDLINE® format with the field tag PMCR. This is the embargo date associated with the availability of the published article in PMC. This date, if present, already displays on the AbstractPlus format (see: PubMed Central® IDs Display in PubMed® AbstractPlus Format). It will display in the XML format in the PubMedPubDate element with the PubStatus attribute, “pmc-release.”
- The Publishing Model field will be removed from the MEDLINE format (field tag: PUBM) as it is no longer needed there.
- The new MeSH® heading, Young Adult, will not be added to the limits Age Group options. In the future, we will consider including it. Items indexed with Young Adult will be retrieved if either Adult: 19-44 years or All Adult: 19+ years are selected as limits. The term can be searched directly as young adult [mh].
- Changes to the Grant Number, as explained in MEDLINE® Data Changes — 2009, may be delayed on the Citation format. The MEDLINE format will be updated when the new system is available.
- The Recent Activity feature is being added to the AbstractPlus display.
- When the addition of MEDLINE records to PubMed resumes, the next automatic e-mail updates will likely be larger than usual (see Annual MEDLINE®/PubMed® Year-End Processing (YEP): Impact on Searching During Fall 2008).
